Why
Murjan Abo Deba, born 1993. Lives and works in Tur’an. Holds a BFA and an MFA from the University of Haifa. Her works have been featured in a solo exhibition at Gefen House, Haifa, and in numerous local and international group exhibitions. She is the winner of the Reuven Hecht Young Artist’s Competition in Plastic Arts (2017), and the Helena Markson Prize for Excellence in the Arts (2017). Her works center on her physical and emotional life as an artist.
In this video work, Murjan Abo Deba stands alone facing the sea. Wearing traditional clothes, she attempts to repeatedly push back the waves with a floor squeegee, in a futile attempt to return them to the sea. Her poetic, minimalist work presents us with a great drama: that of being a Palestinian, Arab, religious artist living in Israel.
