Why
Yuval Atzili frequently explores questions concerning gay male identity. The flamingo is identified with the gay community due to its long phallic neck, delicacy and fragility. In this work, its beauty acquires an ironic twist when we discover it to be made of paper clippings culled from a gay porn magazine. Atzili cuts, assembles and pastes the cuttings in a repetitive manual process, which he parallels to the act of masturbation performed while gazing at pornographic images. When the collage is complete, the original images of a crude male sexuality have been disassembled and processed, and are no longer identifiable. Just as culture constrains human beings to moderate, conceal and control their urges, so Atzili channels the overt sexual urges depicted in the porn magazine into an artistic creation.
