Noa Ben-Nun Melamed, b. 1954
Why
Noa Ben-Nun Melamed explores the place of unique creations in a world filled with mechanical and artificial reproductions. After visiting archaeological sites throughout Israel and photographing ancient vestiges, she subjected the photographs to digital processes involving cutting, duplicating, inverting, and changes of scale. She then used the results to compose new images of invented sculptures, which exist solely within the space of her work. Although these sculptures are figments of her imagination, they call to mind the familiar forms of ancient sculptures. The work echoes the German-Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin’s ideas about art in the age of mechanical reproduction. Benjamin argued that while in the past works were unique and thus surrounded by an aura, today, in the modern age, reproduction processes have resulted in the loss of this aura.
